Larry McDonough has been a legal services and pro bono civil litigation attorney since 1983. He worked in civil legal services for 30 years, and served as Pro Bono Litigation Counsel at Dorsey & Whitney for seven years.

His current positions include:

Senior Fellow, National Housing Law Project (NHLP): His focus at NHLP is updating the HUD Housing Programs: Tenants' Rights (also known as the Green Book) and other publications.

Policy Attorney, HOME Line: His focus at HOME Line is drafting and advocating for housing legislation and mentoring HOME Line attorneys and advocates in litigation and client advice.

He has represented over 11,000 clients, with 250 trials, 1,000 motion hearings, and scores of appellate hearings under his belt. Larry lobbied for and drafted all or part of legislation since 1985, and almost all of the landlord and tenant laws in Minnesota since 1989. He has litigated, co-counsel, and supervised hundreds of trials and motion hearing and scores of appeals since 1983. Larry also created and supervised a number of programs and clinics to provide advice and representation to tenants facing repair problems and court evictions in Hennepin County. See Advocacy: Legislation and Rules, Litigation, Programs and Projects, and Committees, Associations and Volunteering.

He co-founded Minnesota's Annual Housing Law Institute and authored Residential Eviction Defense in Minnesota and forms through many editions posted at http://povertylaw.homestead.com/ResidentialUnlawfulDetainer.html and most of the housing materials posted on http://www.projusticemn.org/ and http://lawhelpmn.org/MN/index.cfm.  He also has published several journal and book chapters articles. See PublicationsPresentations, and Media.

He has taught at all of the law schools in the Twin Cities, including two years as a visiting clinical professor at Hamline University School of Law and the University of Minnesota Law School. He has received many awards over the years, including:

The 2008 Minnesota Justice Foundation Distinguished Service Award, for making significant contributions to poverty law and public interest work and to ensuring equal justice for all Minnesotans http://www2.mnbar.org/mjf/Mjfintr1.htm

The 2004 National Lawyers Guild Minnesota Chapter First Annual Paul Marino People's Lawyer Award, for work as a tenants’ attorney and teacher; and
